The Executive Director (ED) of the National Forestry Authority (NFA), Mr. Michael Mugisa and the Commander of the Special Forces Command (SFC), Brig. Don Nabaasa, have on Friday, October 27, 2017 launched a tree planting campaign in Sera Kasenyi’s SFC Training School, Entebbe in Wakiso district.
“We have planted some ornamental trees as a launch to a bigger planting campaign. It is through their initiative as SFC of reaching out to the NFA.” Mr. Mugisa said.
He disclosed that the nationwide campaign by NFA, targets more than 20 million trees by March 2018. He observed that the promotion of planting ornamental trees, with some having different functions like indigenous and medicinal trees, provides all other benefits and advantages of tree growing.

The head of the NFA further said that they want to emphasize urban forestry where people co-exist with trees especially with the rapid growing centers, towns and cities. He noted that there is need to incorporate trees with facilities like it is widely and extensively practiced in some countries.
The Commander of SFC, Brig. Don Nabaasa, on his part thanked the Executive Director of NFA, for availing the institution of the UPDF with the opportunity to plant 50,000 trees.
“Most of our forests have been cut for charcoal and timber. The swamps are dry because of cultivation. It is one of the reasons our country does not receive the same amount of rainfall as it used to receive in the past,” Brig. Don observed.
He said that as the vanguard of the population, Special Forces Command has started the planting exercise from Sera Kasenyi Training School (SKTS) before spreading it to other establishments. He added that this is just the beginning as many more trees will be planted to cover all detaches.
